De Oude Putz is situated
on the northern border of the well renowned Bushmanland
and to the west of the Orange River Valley. Not only
can you experience typical farmlife, hiking tours
and game drives, but also the unique beauty of the
area, which comprises amongst others the Camelthorn
and Shephard tree (Witgat) as well as communal weaver
birds’ nests, well preserved bushman graves
and magnificent sunsets over deep ravines.
De Oude Putz offers
you a variety of activities:
For the history lovers:
During the Great Trek era, farmers settled
in this area. The outbreak of the “runderpest”
led to the farmers moving away from the river, settling
approximately 10km west of the orange. Here they dug
a well to water their animals and a small community
developed, with a school and a teacher from the Cape.
The San, a nomadic stone age tribe, who followed the
game, also lived in this area for many centuaries.
Their graves can still be seen as well as a cave with
signs of stone age inhabbitants in the area.
The bird watchers:
The area is rich in birdlife. The mountains
and ravines are home to two pairs of black eagles.
Swarms, (up to 1000) of namakwa sandgrouse can be
seen at their waterholes in the morning and just before
sunset. This area is also home to the largest flying
bird – the kori bustard. The well-known community
birds’ nests are plentyful, some so large that
they encompass a whole tree. Many more bird species
are found here for example ostriches, wild geese,
ludwig bussard, korhane as well as a variety of smaller
birds. Hides are currently being built for the avid
birdwatcher, so don’t forget your binoculars,
birdbooks and cameras.
