Founded in 1936 and named after a former Minister
of Agriculture, Groblershoop is a farming and
administrative centre in the Orange River Valley,
east of Upington. In a land of contrasts, through
arid hills and plains, twists a green ribbon,
bringing life and prosperity. Welcome to thiss
historicaly filled village located at the gateway
to the Green Kalahari where you will findlandmarks
such as the historic water
turbine driven by solid-oak gears in
the Orange River on the farm Winstead build
in 1913,
The successful stock farming and wine
production in the region is built on hard work
and pioneering spirit of early residents. Not
only the ancient donkey made it’s mark
in the Groblershoop area!
Development in the region was
really kick started by the construction of the
Boegoeberg
dam a watersports and anglers’ Mecca
surrounded by red Kalahari dunes, quiver trees
and water channels in established in 1929.
Groblershoop is currently a main source of export
for table grapes and sultana’s.
A modern abattoir with 130 employees processes
livestock from surrounding farms, while the
local wine cellars
,open for wine tastings and tours has an annual
intake of 12 000 tons of grapes.
