Route 2 Augrabies/Riemvasmaak
Start your trip full of adventure from Upington on the N14 towards Keimoes.
Recommended breakfast stops: (all of these places below offer accommodation)
Ikaia on the R27, 2km just outside of Keimoes overlooking the Orange River. Make sure to stop at the Quiver Tree nursery 2km past Ikaia to your right on the R359.
Akkerboom Padstal between Keimoes and Kakamas on the N14 (60km from Upington).
Vergelegen stunning ambiance dining around a lush pool area on the N14 en-route to Kakamas 70km from Upington.
Khamkirri dining on a beautiful wooden deck on the Orange river. (109km from Upington).
After breakfast make sure you take the Riemvasmaak turn-off on your right just before you reach the Kakamas main bridge. Follow this gravel-road for approximately 33km and make sure to stop at Khamkirri either going or coming back for a refreshment or stay in their chalets or campsites. Khamkirri also offers selected water activities (fishing and rafting on booking only.) Once you have reached the Riemvasmaak hot-springs office book in and follow the breathtaking winding road all the way down to the springs. You can stay in their chalets or at their campsites, do a hike or just relax in your choice of 3 pools with different temperatures. We do however recommend visiting Riemvasmaak in the mornings during November to March as the temperatures can reach sky high during our summer seasons.
From Riemvasmaak you take another gravel-road going to the R359 tar-road that will take you to the Augrabies Falls. Riemvasmaak to Augrabies is 49km but it will take you an hour to drive. Use it to soak up the rugged beauty of our unique area.
From the Falls you can make your way back on the R359 to Kakamas but with a view stops along the way.
Lake Grappa offer mouthwatering meals at their lapa next to a dam overlooking the vineyards. They offer chalets en the nicest camping facilities if you would like to stay a little longer.
On entering Kakamas you will find Rose Cafe / Belvedere Guesthouse that offers fantastic meals and accommodation.
The “Pienk Padstal” is located in Kakamas, bright pink on your left side towards Keimoes. Here you can shop local produce, arts and crafts.
100m from Pienk Padstal towards Keimoes you'll find Die Mas . Turn-off located on your right for wine and brandy tasting in the vineyards with a STUNNING restaurant overlooking the farm and the Orange River. They offer light meals and platters to complement your wine or brandy. Die Mas also offers chalet and camping accommodation.
The R359 will carry you back via Keimoes to the N14 back to Upington.
