Upington Green Kalahari | Northern Cape

South of its most important asset, the Orange River, which feeds the agriculture and alluvial diamonds industries, Upington is the principal city in the Northern Region, an ideal holiday resort or halfway stop with all the modern conveniences on the major routes to Namibia and Kalahari, Augrabies National Park, Fish River Canyon, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Northern Cape.

No place for the meek, it started out as a mission station, established by a Reverend Christiaan Schroder. A church was erected in 1875 and is today the Kalahari Oranje Museum, complete with all its period furnishings.

Upington was originally called Olyvenhoutsdrif ('Olive wood drift') due to the abundance of olivewood trees in the area. It was renamed Upington in 1898 after the Cape Colony’s attorney general at the time, Sir Thomas Upington.

Upington has a modern airport with scheduled flights provided by SA Airlink (an affiliate of South African Airways). One of the airport's runways is 4900m in length.

Climate - Extreme temperatures with summers often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, and winter dipping very low at night. Night frosts are not unusual. The nicest time of the year in this region is spring.
